E-governance is a model applying technology to perform different transactions between government and different entities such as citizens, consumers, government’s arms and so on. E-governance is aimed to improve the quality of the services provided by the government, to make communication faster and efficient, reduce corruption, introduce transparency, reduce cost to government and make the government people oriented and accountable. In this article we’ll discuss four significant e-governance initiatives taken by government.
Started in 1999, e-seva is a Government-to-citizen project and delivers diverse services online to consumers by bringing a connection between consumers and government departments and provides online service at the point of delivery.
The services provided include payment of utilitybills, issuing licenses and permits and issuing certificates (domicile, birth/death, income, etc.)
Expanded, the acronym FRIENDS stands for Fast, Reliable, Instant, Efficient, Network for the Disbursement of Services. Launched in 2000, it is a Single window facility that enables payment of taxes and other financial dues to State governments. This project is an outstanding example illustrating how computerized service ensures delivery at a faster pace – without having to wait in government offices.
E-Procurement Project (Government-to-Business) Project:
The traditional tendering process was cumbersome because of the series of activities that were required. The process involved delays, absence of transparency, discrimination in awarding the contract, verifying the proposals, and the applicants had to go to government offices multiple times.
Against this backdrop, the e-Procurement project was introduced in 2003. This lead to fewer chances of corrupt practices, reduced the tender cycle time and introduced transparency in bidding etc. It has improved confidence in government’s procedure in conducting business with impartiality and transparency and thus spending taxpayer’s money efficiently.
SmartGov (Government to Government)
SmartGov is a Government to Government e-governance initiative. Government work involves information going in the physical form(files) from one organization to another to solicit comments and opinions. SmartGov happens in e-files instead and is aimed to improve operational efficiency by automation of workflow and knowledge management.
It facilitates automation of repetitive tasks, management of e-files (tracking and closure), proper prioritization of work, efficient collaboration between different departments and systematic document management.
Launched in July 2015, the objective of Digital India is to lead to complete transformation of the country by using ICT in each realm of economy and society.
This is possible by helping citizens get the proper digital infrastructureforservices and by digital empowerment of citizens. The overall objective is to achievegreater penetration of e-governance across the country.
These projects would make an abiding impact on people. It would change the quality of the services provided by government in a positive direction, reduce the inefficiencies and would help create better social environment that is egalitarian and forward-looking.
